SP - ARTE/ 2014 - PASSION
AND/GOOD BUSINESS
TEN YEARS AND MANY
REFLECTIONS
When the SP-Arte/ 2014 was over,
we had the sensation and the certainty that we had found ourselves at
the beginning of a long path of the art market, which is never ever
monotonous. The exhibition represents much more than a formal space
for both presentation and artistic commercialization; it presents
itself as an important and representative place for cultural
reflection but -- observed through a truthful, serious and
diversified perspective -- not only for knowledge but also the
commercialization of the art pieces in display.
Throughout 5 days, one could
enjoy more than 1,300 pieces in 156 galleries -- 78 Brazilian
galleries and 58 galleries abroad --, discover publications on art in
the editorial sector and mainly talk about Art and its dynamics in
hotel lounges, restaurants and halls of those galleries. There was a
frantic dynamics where exhibition changes were constantly taking
place due to the commercialization of pieces. Those changes produced
several different exhibitions which were set up every single day at
the same event. This natural pace of the exhibition brought about an
incredible diversity of pieces, ideas and thoughts, which were
strategically accepted and complemented through informative and
educational actions like the “Curatorial Laboratory” and the
Seminars, which strengthened the SP-Arte. This allowed the fair
participants, artists, gallery owners, curators, reviewers, buyers,
and art lovers and curious people to exercise their questions on Art
and its intrinsic relationships in this universe in a very clear and
objective way. We felt the result on the formation of the physical
structure which was organized and administered correctly so that the
event would be able to be developed where fluidity and assertiveness
were fundamental.
Of course, in spite of all
carefulness and elaborations, there is always some kind of adjustment
to be made during an exhibition of such size. In general, we are now
starting to have a strong representation and understanding of this
artistic reality; factors that are shown at great and relevant
exhibitions like this one. And, in spite of the initial unfamiliarity
from many people, it is clear that this is the right and meaningful
format to be used in the near future and also for the artistic
comprehension and production. Thousands of people, from different
walks of life, social class and schooling, left their homes and moved
around the city to come and visit the SP ARTE (about 5 thousand
visitors a day).
Its opening was attended by
mostly guests, investors, buyers and collectors. On the second and
third days of the exhibition, we had a different kind of buyers who
were not totally focused on the investment itself and some others
were beginners in the art market.
Through its corridors and ramps,
reviewers and art lovers, for example, students, made us dare say
that people in general, in a very engaging and absorbing way, started
to be an active part of this universe and, needless to say, countless
children, along with their parents, were entranced by the colors and
textures which opened their eyes to a new and borderless world.
This reality, which is part of
the ecosystem of Art, is necessarily an issue in the discussion of
art production as passion or a product of a market, which is today
one of the most sought-after financial sector. This issue is a topic
for a longer discussion, but, what we can say is that this is not a
place for the production of curious people, and, unbelievably, the
most valued art is the one that is produced by researchers/artists
who attempt to understand their needs of expression and are committed
to their art and career and are also connected to the world movement
causing the market to see them not only as a safe investment but also
a universal legacy for the interpretation of life. It is then clear
that, no matter how much the relationship involved in the
acquisition of paintings and art objects is a commercial
transaction, there is always emotion and enchantment, or even, other
special forms of understanding and participation, depending on the
soul that contemplates this very art.
We understand that SP-Arte opens
a space for new trends and helps in the contact with Art in a very
accessible way, allowing us gather some information and form a new
perspective for the beauty of composition, textures and colors!
Let’s move on!
